After the Watergate scandal 25 members of Nixon’s administration had been convicted and served prison time. This scandal also helped to create a divisive war in Vietnam. Journalist began adding “gate” after anything that could possibly have a connection to a government scandal. Men in South Korea were giving expensive gifts to U.S. policy and U.S. Congressmen in hope to influence them. Over all four U.S. congressmen were reprimanded for misconduct, some served time and one was found innocent. In July of 1977 Carter was planning on withdrawing the troops from South Korea which is what led to the issue of Korea-Gate. These scandals have created a deep disillusionment with imperial presidency. Also a general cynicism was formed about public officials. The 5 that had originally committed the crime were charged with wiretapping, burglary, and conspiracy. After everything that occurred Nixon resigned and was pardoned. He was the first president to ever resign. Overall the Watergate Scandal caused many Americans to think more about the presidency and question the people in the leadership positions in our government.
